Millenium Avenue and all the walks
To celebrate the New Millennium we planted an avenue of 28 English Oak Trees (Quercus Robor) leading to the entrance of the Bluebell Wood. There we have created a glade with seats, to relax and enjoy the peace of the countryside.
The Blue Walk
1000 metres or approx. three quarters of a mile, half to one hour. This is the shortest walk and is confined to seeing the bluebells in Beaton's Wood. You can take a wheelchair round with care. There are several seats at intervals along this walk.
The Yellow Walk
990 metres or approx. three quarters of a mile. Another extension of the White Walk which leads to Primrose Farm and its livery yards and young cattle. This walk takes you to higher ground giving good views of the surrounding countryside, before leading you back to Beaton's Wood.
The White Walk
1350 metres or approx 1 mile. This is an extension of the Blue Walk diverting at the Lower Pond then on through the fields. It rejoins the latter part of the Blue Walk back in Beaton's Wood.
New Wood Walk
800 metres or approx. half a mile. Planted in 1993 in what was a 12 acre arable field. A pond was also dug in this field adjacent to an existing one. This walk continues to the River Walk and then links up via gate number 6 with the White Walk, so taking the long way back to Beaton's Wood.
The River Walk
1200 metres or approx. three quarters mile circular walk. This leads north west of the New Wood Walk. Alongside a fence bordering a plantation of trees planted in 1998, it continues on to a cut of the Cuckmere River. Follow north joining the main river until you reach a hedge, you can climb stile number 4 as a shortcut to the Green Walk or turn east and follow the hedgeline back to the end of the New Wood Walk. At gate 6 decide to go north and join the White Walk. To return to Beaton's Wood making it a circular walk turn south to bridlegate number 24.
The Red Walk
560 metres or approx. half mile. This is a diversion off the Blue Walk and caters for those who wish to see the horses and young cattle at Primrose Farm. You can then retrace your steps to the Blue Walk, or continue along the Yellow Walk back to Bates Green Farm.
The Green Walk
1700 metres or approx. one and quarter miles. This is an extension of the White Walk which follows the Cuckmere River for about half a mile. You can watch the milking at Parkwood Farm on any day from approximately 3pm to 5pm. N.B. Please watch out for electric fencing and cows that may be in the yard.
The Wild Garlic Walk
320 metres or approx. quarter mile. Cross the Cuckmere River by a narrow footbridge, chldren taking particular care, through Winham Coppice and link up with the Green Walk. A profusion of garlic plants in this area have a strong scent when flowers are out. N.B. There are two stiles on this walk.
