The 2018 Photographic Competition
I should like to thank all those who submitted entries in this year`s competition and, as always, it is a pleasure being involved in the process of judging the winning images. Thank goodness I am assisted with the invaluable help and experience provided by my fellow judges John Watson, Ray Beckwith, both long standing members of the Hailsham Photographic Society and Tim Church, who produces the certificates for the winners and ensures that the Gallery on www.bluebellwalk.co.uk is updated each year with the new images. Judging is not an easy task as the prints provided are in various sizes from A4 downwards, mostly in colour but a few black and white. All entries from each of the five categories are laid out on tables in the Bluebell Barn, then we individually start selecting those that we feel meet the judging criteria as listed in the Competition`s rules, terms and conditions, being composition, visual appeal, technical ability, presentation and subject matter. We then confer to produce a short list for each category, which is discussed until we have unanimity as to which ones are the winner, runner up and any highly commended, a process that takes considerable time. I then have the pleasurable task of informing the various winners, and Tim produces the certificate files, combining a scanned copy of the image and details of the award, for Fotobox of Seaford (fotobox.co.uk) to print. The printed certificates are sent off to the winners with their relevant prize. Tim arranges for each image to be enlarged and printed on board by Rare Reprographics of Hailsham (www.rare-repro.com), which will be displayed in the Bluebell Barn in 2019.

Entry numbers were down this year, especially in the Junior Class, despite producing two very large copies of the flyer, which each year is kindly sponsored by the Camera Centre of Hailsham (www.camcentre.co.uk). We placed these in what we thought where prominent places, by the Gate House and entrance/exit to the Car Park Field, but for some reason it did not boost entry numbers! We noted that Countryfile started accepting entries last year both as prints and JPEGS, so next year as a trial for the Junior Class only, we will accept both prints and JPEGS to see how we can cope with the judging process of both formats. If successful then we will extend it to the Adult Class in 2020.

Sarah Kelleher organizes this Quiz during the Bluebell Walk, in addition to running www.cherrywoodadventures.co.uk, part of which is the Bluebell Club, a woodland playgroup for children aged 2-4, together with their grown-ups who meet regularly in Beatons Wood during the rest of the year. Congratulations to the three prize-winners this year: The Blue Walk - Edie Proctor, The White Walk - Grace Linecar, The Red & Yellow Walk – Grace Packer. The prize they each received was a book `British Wildlife` (see image) kindly supplied by Miles Kelly – UK children`s book publishers www.mileskelly.net
Sorry for the delay in this month`s Blog, but I was in the Isle of Wight for the last week of August on my hols! My next post will be the October/November issue.
