August/September 2023 Update - Garden

As I write this, the rain is pouring down.  The Gardens Team have spent a delightful morning however, planting up containers with our Study Group.  We discussed the different ways in which pots, tubs and boxes can be used to bring Nature closer and then put our waterproofs on in order to critically examine the Bates Green Garden container displays.  Everyone had a go at the lasagna bulb planting technique, and, with the addition of home-made cake, a good time was had by all.  Beautiful creations were taken home.

Most of our temporary pot displays are grown from seed.  We find this is the best way to ensure that the cultivars we want are available.  It is also far more economical.  On Thursday 28th September we will be holding the final session of 2023 which will be all about collecting and storing your own seed.  We will also cover the many ways in which seeds can be sown.  Please join us if you wish.  Lunch can also be purchased so that you can make a day of it, exploring the Gardens and the Wood to your heart’s content.

August is the very best time in which to clean out a wildlife pond.  The amphibians will have left for the summer and so you will be causing the very least disturbance.  It is now traditional for our WRAGS student to dive in and so here we have Alex, who gracefully drifted through the pond cutting back unwanted foliage and clearing out debris.

The current wet weather bodes well for a splendid Autumn season.  We have many mature trees and shrubs here which can colour up beautifully.  The grasses, dahlias, and asters (they now have a ridiculously long name I know) provide movement, colour and texture, and pools of Cyclamen hederifolium are appearing in the Woodland Garden.

We are open every Wednesday until the end of October so come along for what we hope will be a super ‘firework’ display of colour.
