May 2024 Update - Garden

We have had a very cold April here at Bates Green Garden but the temperature is serving to slow down the growth of weeds at least.  The glasshouse is fit to bursting with all manner of summer delights, but I thought that I would showcase some of the current colour and texture in the Garden.

Mature spring flowering shrubs live in all areas of the Garden, the Middle Garden has a delicate white spiraea cultivar lighting up its corner, there is a beautiful Deutzia x rosea ‘Yuki Cherry’ looking better than ever on the end of the Long Border which also contains a fine specimen of spring pink Weigelia.

The Aronia melonacarpa is in full flower on the edge of the Wildlife Pond, its white flowers set off perfectly by the glossy dark-green leaves.

Flowers are providing vital early nectar for pollinating insects.  Aquilegia and poppies are allowed to self-seed freely here and there are geraniums and euphorbia in large groups throughout all areas.

This is the month that our Workshops will commence.  Once the Bluebell Walk has closed, we will hold a different workshop or retreat every Thursday so please look on our website in order to book early.

On the 23rd of May, Sarah will lead a Birdsong Amble in Beatons Wood.  Sarah is an experienced guide who will help you to identify some of the bird species by their song. You will find out folklore and facts about the birds and also take home a woodland birdsong spotter.   Booking available soon.

The Garden Team will be teaching a Softwood Cuttings Workshop on Thursday 30th May.  You will be shown how to select the best material from different plants to make cuttings from them.  This is a hands-on experience and so you will be given plenty of opportunities to have a go yourselves.  Booking available soon.

Soft wood propagation - a course at Bates Green Garden

Enjoy this beautiful month in your parks and gardens and we hope to see you at Bates Green Garden either for a visit or a workshop very soon.
